Hoof imbalance, dysfunction, and the resulting pain is occuring in epidemic proportions. Uneducated farriers are causing a lot of damage and suffering. It's a sad yet unfortunately true fact.
The horses I care for at my non-profit, Pure Joy Horse Haven, experienced years of pain and damage at the hands of a farrier I trusted to do a good job. I thought the horses' poor hooves were because of something I was doing wrong, that it was my fault.
Now I know better.
It wasn't my fault but it became up to me to fix the problem and restore hoof health and comfort to the horses. That meant I had to educate myself and become a barefoot trimmer.
It's been a wonderful experience to see horses that were lame for years running and playing pain-free. Now I teach other horse owners how to trim their horses so they no longer have to wonder if their horses feet are being trimmed properly, and like I said most of them are not.
Here's the first thing you need to know. Trimming a foot is not rocket science. Once you understand the principles of barefoot trimming, you can confidently do the work.
