What Thrush Can Do to a Horse's Hoof #shorts #horse #horsecare #hoofcare #horsehelp #horserehab

What is thrush? It's a bacterial and/or fungal infection of the hoof. Bacteria is able to infiltrate when hoof tissue is weak and porous. A healthy hoof has dense tight tissues that don't allow those nasties in. Thrush eats away at your horse's hoof. The frog is the most susceptible because the collateral grooves, the crevices that run alongside the frog, provide the dark, damp, oxygen-free environment bacteria thrive in. The buggers get into the collateral groove, then do their worst to the frog tissue. Thrush can also get into the frog through the central sulcus. In a healthy hoof, the central sulcus is shallow, like a thumb print. When the back of the hoof isn't being properly trimmed, the heels collapse and contract. This causes the central sulcus to be tightly pinched together. This creates a fissure in which the bacteria find a happy home then go to work doing what flesh-eating bacteria do. This can do serious damage deep into the hoof capsule and cause pain for the horse. This hoof in the video has bacterial damage in the frog. The bacteria are opportunistic and saw another food source in the narrow space between the heel bulbs. That narrow space was caused by incorrect trimming that allowed the space to compress. From there the bacteria has migrated into the soft tissue, digital cushion, above the hairline. This horse is undergoing treatment with Magic Hoof Mudd to gently and safely kill the bacteria (available at PureJoyHorsemanship.com) and a new trimming regimen to restore function to the back of the hoof.
